At The Cullen Dental Practice, we want our patients to achieve smiles that are both healthy and beautiful. To help you brighten and lighten your teeth, we offer teeth whitening at our Putney, London, UK, dental practice. We offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening options, so that you can achieve the smile you have been wanting.
Tooth discoloration is a common problem among adults. Even if patients brush and floss daily, and attend routine dental cleanings, many feel that their smile could use some level of brightening. There are two types of dental stains: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are located on the surface of the teeth, whereas intrinsic stains are deeper, affecting the underlying portion of the tooth.
Frequent consumption of certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, black tea, soda, tomato sauce, and berries, can cause extrinsic staining. Smoking can also cause this type of staining. Extrinsic stains may appear brown or yellow. Intrinsic stains are more gray in color, or may resemble white spots. In terms of results, teeth whitening treatment works best on extrinsic stains.
The Cullen Dental Practice team can review teeth staining with you during your appointment, so that you can help minimise it from occurring in the future. Eliminating certain foods and stopping smoking can be helpful, particularly after your teeth whitening session, to help maintain your results.
Since teeth whitening is a low-risk procedure, most patients are suitable candidates. However, teeth whitening is not appropriate for certain patients, including:
Dr. Cullen can talk to you about your candidacy. For instance, if you suffer from tooth sensitivity, there may be alternatives, such as supervised treatments, lower potency whitening gels, or shorter treatment periods. Also, in cases of deep dental stains, other cosmetic dentistry options may be a good option, such as LUMINEERS®.
The Cullen Dental Practice offers in-office and at-home teeth whitening options. The fastest results are attained through in-office whitening. During an in-office whitening session, we will first clean your teeth and gums. Since the peroxide in professional-strength whitening gel can irritate the gums, we will place a protective barrier over your gums.
Dr. Cullen will apply the whitening gel to the enamel on your teeth, and will make sure that the gel is applied evenly, so that you will achieve a uniform result. Typically, the gel remains on your teeth for 15 minutes, is removed, and then reapplied. Three or four applications are usually sufficient. Most patients will experience a rejuvenated smile that is up to eight shades lighter, in just one visit. You may want periodic whitening sessions to maintain your smile.
If you prefer to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, an at-home whitening option may be best. With this method, you will receive custom-made trays for the whitening gel. To fabricate the trays,Dr. Cullen will take impressions of your teeth, then create whitening trays to comfortably and securely fit your mouth.
At home, you will fill the trays with the whitening gel, and place them in your mouth. Typically, patients wear the trays for 15 minutes to one hour daily. Typically, your whitening treatment takes about two weeks. Touch-up treatments may be administered as needed, with the advice of Dr. Cullen.
If you are a good candidate, professional teeth whitening can help you achieve a dazzling, brighter smile. Teeth whitening is a quick, safe way to improve your appearance.
A major advantage to teeth whitening, particularly in-office treatments, is that they are dentist-supervised. There are many teeth-whitening products available in stores. But patients should be careful about using these products. When used incorrectly, they can damage teeth and gums. Not only are dentist-supervised whitening treatments safer, they are more effective at removing dental stains.
