People are often unaware they have gum (periodontal) disease as it tends to be painless. More adult teeth are lost through gum disease than tooth decay.
The hygienist role is crucial in preventing dental decay and gum disease.
There are few warning signs, possibly red inflamed gums, which may bleed with brushing or flossing (gingivitis). If left untreated, this may develop over time into bone loss and loose teeth (periodontitis).
It is important to detect periodontal disease early, through regular dental check-ups, to prevent the disease progressing to tooth loss.
The dental hygienist works together with the patient to explain, treat and prevent gum disease, by showing the patient how to use floss, toothbrushes and interdental brushes to remove plaque effectively. The dental hygienist also advises how to maintain an individual home care regimen and carries out regular professional scale and polish to remove hard calculus deposits.
Dental hygienists give dietary advice and oral hygiene instructions to both adults and children, including fissure sealants to children to prevent decay. Smoking cessation advice is also given to adults, as nicotine is a contributing factor for gum disease.
The dental hygienist and the dentist work as a team, to provide the patient with care which is designed to prevent oral disease and to ensure healthy gums and teeth.
For the patient prevention is the most cost effective form of treatment. The hygienists role is crucial in preventing dental decay and gum disease. Prevention is also the best option for the patient’s oral health and their general health as bacteria involved in oral disease is implicated in heart and lung disease.
Our aim at The Cullen Dental Practice is to provide the very best treatment and advice for our patients.
