We recommend using a fluoride tooth paste to clean teeth at least twice daily. For children we recommend using a children's toothpaste with a lower dose of fluoride as well as having fluoride releasing fissure sealants placed by the dental hygienist as soon as new teeth arrive through the gum into the mouth.
Adults use the higher dose regular toothpaste.
The science behind the use of fluoride is simple.Enamel is made up from hydroxyapatite crystals and when teeth are brushed with a fluoride toothpaste the hydroxyapatite converts to fluorapatite which is much stronger and able to resist the acidic western diet. The key to using a fluoride toothpaste is to use a pea size amount and spread on to all the surfaces of the teeth preferably using an electric toothbrush.
Older patients may benefit from the application of stronger fluoride to help prevent "root caries".
Good oral hygiene is very important in keeping both teeth and gums healthy thereby preventing dental disease.
At home oral hygiene involves brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and an electric tooth brush . This should be done at least twice a day and preferably after meals as well. Use of interdental brushes eg tepes and floss is also essential to clean between the teeth.
Our hygienist can customise an oral hygiene care routine specifically for you and remove deposits on teeth which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone.
